Build Your Future in Civil Engineering: Take the Leap Like Ali Sutherland
Posted on
Thinking about a career change? You’re not alone, and for Ali Sutherland, joining Pat Munro as a Site Engineer was a decision that transformed his career. Recognising the growing demand for skilled Civil Engineering professionals across the Highlands and Moray, particularly qualified Site Engineers, Ali decided to explore the opportunities in this dynamic sector.
After speaking to colleagues already working at Pat Munro and researching the career progression available, he took the leap and hasn’t looked back. Today, Ali is a valued member of our team, working in a sector that offers variety, growth, and the chance to make a real impact in our local communities.
A Career Change That Paid Off
Ali explains,
It was just time for a change in my own career. After speaking to people I knew at Pat Munro, they had nothing but good things to say about the company.
Although Civil Engineering wasn’t always his planned career path, Ali knew he wanted to work in construction. The Site Engineer role caught his attention, and when the opportunity arose to study Civil Engineering at UHI Inverness, he jumped at the chance. Achieving his Diploma in Civil Engineering was a proud milestone, marking both personal commitment and professional progress.
No Two Days the Same
One of the biggest attractions of being a Site Engineer is the diversity of the role
Ali says. His days can include setting out works, surveying, producing drawings, managing quality assurance, and overseeing health and safety. Some days are spent moving between sites, others are deeply focused on one major project.
His favourite project so far? The Burn Road project in Inverness, a technically challenging scheme involving a new combined sewer overflow chamber, reinforced concrete structures, manholes, and associated infrastructure.
It’s this combination of technical challenge, responsibility, and tangible results that makes the role so rewarding. As Ali points out:
Construction today is far broader than many people realise. It’s not just traditional trades; it spans engineering, project management, surveying, health & safety, environmental planning, logistics, finance, and more. There is genuinely something for everyone.
Building a career close to home
Joining Pat Munro offers the unique opportunity to grow your career without leaving the Highlands and Moray. You’ll work on projects that directly shape your community, while benefiting from the stability and support of a company with over 80 years of heritage. Working locally means less commuting, stronger connections with colleagues and clients, and the satisfaction of seeing your work make a real impact on the places you live and care about. It’s a chance to develop professionally, build lasting relationships, and be part of a team that truly values your contribution.
Ready to Take the First Step?
If you’re considering a career in Civil Engineering or a Construction Apprenticeship, Ali’s advice is simple:
Go for it. Pat Munro is a great company to work for, and there are great people here. You’ll learn a lot, not just from college, but from the colleagues you work with every day.
