Waste Facility Operative / Trainee Class 1 HGV

Working Hours

Mon-Fri (8am to 5pm) depending on workloads, with a guaranteed 39 hour per week minimum

Depending on experience 

·       Mon-Fri: Time and a Half after 39 hours

·       Saturday: First 4hrs Time and a Half, Double Time thereafter

·       Sunday: Double Time

(Weekend work is optional)

Probationary Period 3 months from commencement

Core Functions of Role:

  • Support IWT (Inverness Waste Transfer) station Supervisor (during HGV training period)
  • Driving of HGV vehicles (upon completion of training)

As a Waste Facility Operative, your duties will include:

  • Ensuring waste is properly identified and put into the relevant storage areas
  • Be trained on the operation of plant to aid loading of vehicles
  • Support customers with their waste disposal requirements
  • Deliveries and collections in company vehicles as required
  • Keep all facility areas in a clean and tidy manner

In addition, you will undertake relevant training to obtain your class 1 HGV licence. Upon successful completion you will drive (with training) the following HGV vehicles as required:

  • Skip Lorry
  • Hook Loader
  • Relief Refuse Collection Vehicle (early morning starts 4am)

Any other HGV vehicle that may be required to meet the operational requirements of the business.   

Your duties will include:

  • Carrying out daily vehicle checks
  • Effectively carry out delivery and collection of skips and ensuring customer satisfaction
  • Driving of other vehicles as and when required, delivering/collecting a variety of materials
  • Completion of all necessary paperwork daily & weekly
  • Reporting any vehicle defects
  • Adhering to all health & safety requirements

You will also be expected to ensure that all operations are carried out in line with UK and EU laws and regulations. These govern vehicle safety, driver hours, and customer’s requirements.

Applicant Qualities

The successful applicant will have the following skills, qualities & experience: -

  • Must hold a Full UK Driving Licence as a minimum
  • Willing to undertake training in a timely manner (6 months) to obtain a Full HGV (Class 1) licence
  • Obtain Driver Qualification Card
  • Obtain Digital Tachograph Card
  • Flexible approach to work as driving different types of vehicle/delivering a variety of materials will be expected
  • Must be willing to undertake very early morning starts (relief Bin lorry)
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to deal with people at all levels
  • The ability to assist and co-operate with other personnel from all departments
  • The ability to work to schedules and follow instructions
  • The ability to work flexibly and to make decisions quickly
