Duration 2 year training period (potential to progress onto further training and a permanent role)

Job Summary

You will work towards a Modern Apprenticeship in Road Building and Maintenance at the same time as working on site. You will learn from more experienced operatives, shadowing them and taking on more responsibilities as you become more confident in your knowledge.

 

Training

SVQ Road Building and Maintenance SCQF Level 5

Along with on the job training, you will be attending Inchinnan College in Glasgow Inverness

You will undertake training to attain SVQ Road Building and Maintenance SCQF Level 5 which will be on a Block Release Basis at through the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).

As an Apprentice Road Surfacing Operative, you will have training in:

  • Establishing work are protection 
  • Segregation of highway works
  • Locating and protecting utilities in the highway 
  • Excavation 
  • Reinstatement of highways  
  • Drainage 
  • Health and safety
  • Manual handling
  • Safe use of small plant

 

Principal Job Responsibilities

As an Apprentice Road Surfacing Operative, you will be required to undertake the following: -

  • Work as part of a Surfacing squad, undertaking road maintenance, road and footway surfacing, as well as other ancillary activities such as planing.
  • Perform banksman duties for items of plant and delivery vehicles.
  • Perform traffic management duties.
  • Manual placement of asphalt materials including shovelling, barrowing and raking.
  • Operate items of plant (pavers, rollers, tractairs, etc) as well as hand-held items such as saws and breakers.
  • Daily pre-use checks on plant including daily maintenance i.e. greasing, cleaning, topping up of fluids etc.

 

Applicant Qualities

The successful applicant will ideally have the following skills, qualities and experience:-

  • Full UK driving licence (preferred but not essential).
  • The ability to work effectively with others as a competent team member.
  • A genuine desire to work in the road surfacing field.
  • We are looking for someone who is a versatile, flexible and accommodating worker.
  • Be trustworthy, friendly, timeous and reliable.
